My senior dog has a growing red lump on his head. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 13 years and 7 months old | 60 lbs

My 13 year old dog recently has a growth on his head. At first we though it was just some sort of mole, but it has been getting bigger (and redder) each day.

Poor pup! Since this growth has popped up fairly recently and seems to be growing quickly, I would recommend taking Hercules to the vet to have it checked. It isn't possible to tell for sure what it is just by looking, but your veterinarian can do a simple test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) to find out - this involves poking the mass with a small needle to collect some cells from inside it, which are then put on a slide and examined under the microscope. He/she should be able to advise you on whether the growth needs to be removed or not based on the FNA results.
