My budgie is sleepy, stressed, and losing feathers. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I think my budgie has a feather issue ( i have attached a photo). What do you think? Other important things: he is sleepy during the day, he doesn't sing, he looks stressed (he shivers when i approach him), but he eats and drinks water. He also loses some fluff.

His feathers look alright as far as I can tell from the photo (no bald patches, etc), however an exam in person is best if you suspect there is an issue. Mites, nutrition issues, boredom, stress, etc can all be possible causes of issues. If you are seeing flecks of "stuff" at the base of the feathers, this could indicate mites, especially if he is itchy or bothered by it. Treating with a mite spray can help. If you are seeing visible wounds, redness, or signs of illness, it could indicate infection, or another issue which should be checked by a vet in person. If you suspect boredom or stress, adding in extra toys for fun, offering treats, or spending time together can help him get used to you. Placing his cage in a quiet area away from noisy pets and people can also help. Making sure The Little is on a balanced budgie diet can also help ensure his feathers stay healthy and colorful.
