My dog won't eat her dog food, only wants human food. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 4 years and 8 months old | 25 lbs

I have a wiener dog that will eat people food but has stopped eating her dog food. Still drinking water, will grab a nibble of dry food once and a while. Dry nose. Pee no problem

It could be that Zoe is getting too much human food, she likes it better, and that's why she isn't eating her dog food. She knows she will get human food. Put her food down in the morning, and leave it for 15-20 minutes. Pick it up after that time even if she hasn't eaten it. Then this is the important thing: Do NOT give her any food at all in-between meals. No human food, no treats, nothing. At dinner time, put her food down, and again leave it for 15-20 minutes. Pick it up after this time, and she doesn't get any food at all until the next morning. She will get hungry enough to eat. To be safe, having a health check with the vet would be a good idea just to make sure everything is ok. I hope this helps!
