Why is my puppy sick, refusing food, and not gaining weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Male | unneutered | 2 months old | 0.8 lbs

I'm a breeder with 30 years experience. Recently a few puppies won't eat canned or dry puppy food. I took one to my vet, he checked out healthy. But he still refused to eat and died at 3 months old. Now I'm going through the same thing with a 10 week old poodle, he only weighs 9 ounces. Do you know what's going on?

I am sorry to hear about your puppies. If the vet has not done any diagnostic testing that would be my recommendation, including bloodwork as well as imaging such as x-ray and ultrasound to try to identify a cause for this issue. If anyother puppy ends up passing away, I would recommend a necrospy be performed to try to determine if this could be a congenital problem.
