My 10-month-old puppy has soft stools. Is she too old for puppy food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 10 months and 19 days old | 20 lbs

My new rescue dog Rosie, is approximately 10-12 months old. She is (eagerly) eating puppy food but her stools seem very soft. Is she too old for the puppy food or should I give her some sort of supplement? She gets almost no “people” food. Thanks

Good quality complete puppy food for small dogs should be perfect for another 8 months. Make sure she is wormed every three months. You can feed some canned pumpkin as well, as this may help with consistency of the poop. It is also a good idea to take a fresh stool sample for a fecal exam to your vet as certain intestinal parasites not covered by regular worming, or bacterial overgrowth, can also cause soft stools.
