My unneutered dog's penis is bleeding. Is it a prostate issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 6 months old

1month ago was given antibiotics and anti inflammatory for blood coming from sheath of penis-vet said had discharge as well inside sheath and believed debris was stuck up there. Rectal exam was done and didn’t believe there was any issue there. Today, bleeding again from sheath. It’s always just a few drops. Possibiity meds weren’t given long enough to resolve or more serious issue?Acting completely normal.

Hades may have an enlarged prostate or prostate inflammation which often causes such bleeding. You can check his penis carefully by moving the sheath off the penis. THe penis should not have any damage, scabs and there should not be any excessive discharge. You may see a small amount of yellowish smegma. If there is an injury, discoloration or a lot of pus, he needs to be seen by your veterinarian again. If there is a chronic problem it may be a good idea to have him neutered as this will make the prostrate shrink and stop excessive purulent discharge.
