My dog has an ear hematoma. Is surgery necessary? Why drain it first?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | 8 years and 4 months old | 92 lbs

My dog and I just came from vet where he had a hematoma in ear flap drained. Vet said that it will most likely fill up again and scheduled surgery for Tuesday. He had no ear infections but vet said probably had allergies. Gave us Apoquel script. I guess my question is, is surgery necessary? And why drain it and schedule surgery at the same time?

Poor Bodie! Your vet is correct, typically aural hematomas do fill up again, and your vet would have drained it to provide comfort to him. They are uncomfortable to the dog. The surgery is necessary to prevent it from filling up over and over so you don't have to keep bringing him back in to get it drained. I hope this helps!
