Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Sampson! There are many reasons for coughing. Sometimes the dog will cough hard enough to trigger the gag reflex and then non-productively retch. Sometimes they even bring up bile or foam. Just be sure he isn't trying to vomit. If he is trying to vomit, pacing, restless, panting and his belly looks big then that is an emergency (bloat). Otherwise causes of coughing are: kennel cough, pneumonia, heart disease, fluid around the heart, cancer, allergies, laryngeal dysfunction, reflux. If he goes to doggie day care, dog parks or was recently boarded it is likely kennel cough which tends to be self limiting in 2 weeks. If he hasn't gone to any of those types of places I would talk him the Vet for an exam since he is an older dog. I wish you the best!
