Pain and weakness is commonly a sign of degenerative joint disease and arthritis in older dogs. Neurologic problems could also cause similar signs. I would recommend having Jake examined by your veterinarian. If they are suspicious of arthritis you can discuss treatment options: glucosamine supplements, pain medications like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, fish oil supplements, acupuncture, physical therapy and maintaining an ideal body condition can all help.

There are several possible reasons for the symptoms you are describing. One possibility is that Nikki may just have some arthritis in the legs and or hips that is causing her to have difficulty staying up and Rising. If this is the case this can be treated with medications on an as-needed or daily basis. Other possibilities include issues with the spine, certain infectious diseases, and certain types of cancer. Given her Advanced age it is very difficult to predict which of these is most likely without a physical exam and some diagnostic testing. I would recommend that you take her in to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as you can. Hope this helps!

Poor Flex! It could be that he is suffering from degenerative joint disease in his hips or spines, or could have a problem with his knees. I would have him checked out by a vet to have a lameness exam and x-rays done to diagnose what is causing his problems. He may benefit from pain medications and anti-inflammatory medications as well. I would recommend bringing Flex into the vet tomorrow morning.
