My cat has gas on good food. Should I switch her diet or add a probiotic?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 2 years old | 9 lbs

Just asked about Tempest's farts, was told to go to a better quality food. Thing is, we have her on what I understand is a really good quality brand. Purina One True Instinct Natural Grain Free Chicken dry food, and Sheba Perfect Portions Pate and Cuts in Gravy for wet food. We feed her 2 scoops of dry in the morning, 4am-7am range, with 1 portion (1oz) of wet, usually she gets the dry to last until 5pm, and then we give her one dry scoop and one wet portion at about 9:30pm. Water always filled.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Regardless of the quality of the food, sometimes the best food is not always the best choice for the cat and may not agree with the cat's digestive tract. Regardless of the quality, I would still recommend switching to not a 'better' food but a 'different' food such as Science Diet or Royal Canin and see if a new food or different formula makes a difference. I would also consider adding in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora, which can be found online or at your local Petco. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
