Is Pyrantel Pamoate safe for my nursing cat with suspected worms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 10 lbs

I have a nursing cat with half solid stool and half soft stool and I think it may have gotten worms from my other cat who recently got diarrhea (he’s been treated already). I wanted to know, is this something to worry over? And if she is sick, can she take Pyrantel Pamoate while nursing?

All nursing moms should have at least 2 doses of dewormer 2-3 weeks apart. Worms are passed to kittens while nursing so it is highly likely that all the kittens have worms. The standard recommendation is to deworm all kittens at weeks 2, 4, 6, and 8 with pyrantel pamoate and make sure momma cat is treated as well.

Pyrantel pamoate is safe for use in pregnant and nursing pets. Ask your vet for a dose to give her. She should also be redosed in 2 weeks. Your vet can also give you dewormer and a schedule for the kittens. Typically, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 weeks of age.
