My iguana's tail is bleeding from a reopened wound. Can we save it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I was holding my iguana he was startled by a loud noise in the other room. I noticed his tail was bleeding and ripped open the slightest bit. When he scrambled from the noise his claw scratched me so I'm not sure if he also cut his tail or he tried to drop his tail but it was only a small cut. It seemed to be healing but two days later in his tank he jumped from one of his branches and reopened the wound. It was bleeding and ripped almost halfway. Will he loose his tail? Can we save it?

Without an image, it is difficult to determine with any certainty. Do not handle him for a few days and keep the wound clean. You can use some diluted betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) to clean it up. Have Andy physically examined by your veterinarian, or a vet experienced in treating reptiles, if the wound does not heal or if Andy becomes lethargic or stops eating.
