My 12-week puppy pees tiny amounts often outside crate. Is it normal?

My 12 week old puppy sleeps in a crate and hasn’t had a bathroom incident in there yet. He’s slept for periods of 4-5hrs at a time. However, when he’s out of the crate/pen area he pees very frequently - multiple times in a 10min period. Often very small amounts of pee at a time - a couple of drops. Is he okay? Is it a training issue or medical?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is likely a training/puppy thing. But it may be a good idea to collect a urine sample and have your vet test it for a urinary tract infection or crystals. When puppies are awake they are more focused on drinking and playing then holding their urine. Limit water when indoors and not outside in the heat and take him out as soon as he starts sniffing or stops playing. Do not let him wander out of your sight and take him out often. Verbally praise him and give him treats then let him play outside for 5-10 minutes before heading back in. The fact he can hold his urine for 4-6 hours in the crate makes a medical condition less likely. Good luck!
