My potty-trained dog pees inside. Is it medical, anxiety, or diet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 11 lbs

My dog keeps have accidents. He is potty trained and knows how to pee outside and he goes out frequently. When we put him in his play pen when nobody is home he pees even if we’re gone for 5 minutes t seems as if he’s doing it to get on my nerves. Last night he peed on me and his pee felt like it was burning my skin as if it was acidic. When he eats dry dog food it’s worse but he’s been eating those cups of Cesar’s wet dog food which seems to help.

There could be a medical reason behind Carl having accidents. It could be that he is suffering from a UTI or bladder stones. It could also be that he is experiencing separation anxiety if he's peeing when you leave. I recommend crating him when you are gone. The crate will provide him a small space where he can feel safe in it when you are gone. You will have to slowly train him to get used to a crate. Start putting him in it when you are home and sitting nearby so he doesn't think you are abandoning him, and slowly increase the time he is in it. He can have toys in the crate, and puzzle toys with treats in it that he has to figure out how to get the treats out. You can put a tablespoon of peanut butter in a Kong toy and freeze it in the freezer overnight, then give it to him in the crate. That will keep him occupied for a while. Give the vet a call in the morning to make an appointment for him to see if he may have a UTI or bladder stones. Best of luck.
