My dog is hoarse from barking too much. What can I give him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 8 years and 11 months old | 10 lbs

My 10 pound Chi-Terrier mix has gone hoarse from barking too much. Is there something I can give him to soothe this? He will be 9 on Aug 24, and I do not want to take him to have surgery. I was gone away for 4 days, and had someone come to the house to feed/potty him. He apparently barked at her all weekend long.

A loss of voice is not uncommon after a period of persistent barking and will normally improve over 4-6 weeks. I recommend a full vet check if he shows any additional symptoms such as difficulty swallowing or coughing
