Puppy vomited yellow rice after medication. Does he need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | neutered | 4 months and 21 days old | 7.8 lbs

Puppy seen in ED on 8/4 after swallowing 81 mg ASA ... given med to throw up. Put on carafate TID x7 days, told to follow bland diet (have been giving him rice BID). Vomited x1 (yellow tinged with full rice particles) today...does he need to be seen by vet or is this common given he is not eating his regular diet? (only eating BID like his normal schedule despite giving med TID)

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If he is eating, playing, and otherwise himself, I’m not too concerned about one episode of vomiting. Withold food and water for 2-3 hours to let his stomach rest. Then continue as you have been, but make his next meal a bit smaller to make sure he keeps it down ok. If vomiting persists, he is lethargic, or loses his appetite, see a vet. Best wishes to you and Guido!
