My dog's anal area is red, swollen, licking after expression. Help!

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 5 months old | 15 lbs

My dog got her anal glands expressed yesterday but she is still licking the area and the area is red and swollen. Every minute or so she would lick the area and whine every now and then. I don’t know what to do because I’m leaving for vacation tomorrow and handing her over to my cousins. What should I do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This swelling is very severe and warrants an evaluation by a veterinarian for further assessment. This could be related to allergies possibly causing the licking. You can use an e-collar to prevent further licking which would continue to exacerbate this swelling. You can get an e-collar online or at your local pet store. This is most likely causing her pain so pain medications can be started by your veterinarian. Also, this area has become infected and antibiotics will be needed. Good luck and have a good night!
