Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog has crf. She is on a prescription kidney diet and refuse to eat it. I'm trying to find some good home made recipes for her. What is a good low phosphorus low protein meat she can eat?

Hello. Honestly, there is nothing better than using one of the prescription renal diets. Have you tried Hill's Prescription stew versions? When a pet will not eat a prescription diet, I have them take the regular diet ( either dry or canned ) & put the daily amount in a glass jar. To this, add just a small amount of the new food & put in the fridge overnight. This allows all the flavors to meld. Each day, add just a little more new food while removing the same amount of old. I do not care if it takes 2 months or longer to switch a dog over, eventually, they will accept the new food. Please give this a try. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Regarding meat, there is no low protein low phosphorus meat. By nature, all meat is high in both. If you are wanting to create a good balanced homemade diet specific to your pets needs, check out the site www.balanceit.com.
