My 6-month-old cat has a painless lump on his face. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat has a lump on his face. He is 6 months old and has been neutered. It's not bothering him he is still eating and drinking. It doesn't hurt him it seems as he lets us touch it. I can see no wound such as a bite or a sting. He is still acting exactly the same as usual. I doubt it is to do with it but he was microchipped 2 days ago.

This may be a cat bite abscess or a sialocele (salivary gland cyst) or a swollen lymph node or tumor. You should make an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam, as a sialocele, while initially painless, can quickly become painful and often the salivary ducts are obstructed. A cat bite abscess needs to be addressed as well and a swollen lymph node can be a pointer to some inflammatory process in the body.

Hi there, It looks like Timmy may have an abscess. This could be either caused by and injury or an infected tooth. I would recommend having your vet see Timmy and determine the cause, as well as flush the abscess if that's what they find. An abscess can cause fever and pain left untreated. I hope that helps and thanks for using Pet Coach!
