Is it safe for a young dog to get pregnant during her first heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 months and 25 days old | 60 lbs

So I’m afraid Quinn will get pregnant on her first heat. We will do anything to prevent it (don’t have the money to get her fixed for a while). Dogs can get into our yard easily but she will be in the house all the time. If she does by chance happen to accidentally get pregnant, will she be okay? She’s a healthy girl. It just worries me how young they are when they go into heat and possibly get pregnant.

While it's not recommended that a dog gets pregnant on their first heat, typically they do tend to be ok. If she does accidentally get pregnant, be sure to have regular visits with the vet, and have money set aside in case she needs an emergency c section. I hope this helps!
