My dog is limping and crying in pain. Should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old | 60 lbs

Yesterday Maui was limping after playing outside all day(he’s very active and loves to stretch his body) and stopped limp on his right hind leg. This am he cried and screamed like he was in so much pain. He still jumps up on couch/bed and touch doesn’t bother him like it hurts, yet he only wants to go lay alone and looks so sad, maybe strained and should wait it out? Or does he need to be taken in?

Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Maui's care today! Lameness can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Treatment will be dependent on findings though at the very least pain control medications can be prescribed. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
