What to do if my dog has diarrhea, vomiting, and blood in stool?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Basset Hound | Female | spayed | 2 years and 9 months old | 50 lbs

I have a female Bassett hound. She is spayed and will be 3 in October. She began having diarrhea last night and has had 4 bowel movements. Her feces is runny, has a lot of mucus, and there was some blood in it. The blood was only in the last bowel movement. She has also vomited 2 times today. She has not eaten yet today, which isn’t unusual. Sometimes she waits u til dinner time to eat. Her activity level is relatively normal.

You can try withholding food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte, no more than 2-3 tablespoons every hour. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount if there is no vomiting. Feed bland until the stool is normal and she has not vomited in 24-36 hours. Transition slowly to her regular diet afterwards. If the vomiting or diarrhea persist for more than 24 hours, have her physically examined by your veterinarian. If she develops lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain, have her physically examined by your veterinarian.
