Juniors vet says he doesn’t have ear mites and says he has wax build up in his ear. Junior has had this for 2 years now and it comes and go’s but it’s extremely itchy and uncomfortable for him. Could it be an ear infection? Junior has been treated for the wax build up but it never fully goes away ever. What could it be? Do you know? What should I do? I feel like my vet isn’t listening to me when I tell him it isn’t helping.

It could be an ear infection. A physical examine would be needed for confirmation. A swab of the ears can be examined under a microscope in the clinic to diagnose a bacterial or yeast (fungal) infection. A combination of the two is also possible. A build up of wax could keep you from cleaning the ear completely and would predispose Junior to chronic ear infections. In this case, you could use a cleaner that breaks down wax or you could have Junior sedated and then have his ears cleaned completely. Itchy ear may also have an allergic component, so discuss allergy testing, hydrolyzed diets, antihistamine use and food elimination trials with your veterinarian. If at any point you are not satisfied with the level of care being provided, you can always seek out a second opinion or different clinic.
