Why won't my dogs eat after a loss or when another dog is sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | 76 years and 4 months old

I had one of my 4 dogs after trying with medicine from the vet for arthritis pain and not being able to finally not walk had to be euthanized. Now, another one who is also about 12 = 13 years old having the same problem and on pain meds. My other two dogs now won't eat and I believe it's because of the loss of one of the pack and now this one going thru the same thing. Not sure what to do to get them eating their dinners, etc.

Dogs, just like people, can mourn the loss of a friend, so it is possible they are feeling a bit depressed. If they are less interested in their food, you can try some minor additives such as a little bit of wet food or low-sodium chicken broth to make it more enticing until they return to normal. If they continue to not be interested in eating at all to the point of weight loss, or you see other symptoms of illness beyond this, scheduling a vet check to rule out any more serious underlying problems, especially if all dogs are affected, is best.
