My dog throws up after eating but acts normal. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | unneutered | 18 lbs

My dog is a 6 year old Maltese. He recents started puking after he ate. It started 2-3 days ago. First time, we thought it was how fast he ate. Second time, he puked a very clear thick substance. This time, it was after he ate, it was chunky, I’m guessing his food. He’s playing normally and going outside, just sleepy. He drank water and has kept it down well. Any suggestions?

Poor Gunner! It's concerning that he is vomiting after he is eating, and it could be he has a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, or could have a foreign body among other causes. Because he's acting normally otherwise, I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.
