My dog has diarrhea, soft poop, and blood. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 4.7 lbs

My dog had diarrhea this morning and just went poop right now. It was a soft poop and after it came out she pushed a little more and blood came out. She has been sneezing the past few days but acting totally normal. Should we be worried? What should we do?

Poor Irie! There may be some blood in her feces because her intestines are irritated from the diarrhea. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps her. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, then I would be worried and she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

She certainly could have some inflammation in her intestines from eating foreign material. If she is not vomiting than an obstruction is not as likely. Since this has been happening for a few days, it would be a good idea to have your vet take a look at her and treat. Your vet can run lab-work and take an x-ray, if needed, to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to help treat the diarrhea. An antibiotic and an anti-diarrhea medication may be needed. You could also add a probiotic to her diet to see if that helps, too. Hope she is all better soon!

Poor Arizona! Whether or not this is an emergency depends on a few things. If she hasn't been vaccinated, she's not eating, she's very lethargic, and/or she is also vomiting, then yes this is an emergency and she has to see a vet now. Otherwise, the blood and mucus could be from irritation to the GI tract and as long as she is eating and drinking, not vomiting, isn't lethargic, and is fully vaccinated, it's fine to wait until tomorrow to take her into the vet. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He may be ok. Sometimes diarrhea can be mild and resolve with something like using a bland diet like you are doing. However, if this continues, this warrants a veterinary evaluation. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Bailey evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications for diarrhea depending on the results. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
