Do dogs need all their vaccinations every year? How often is enough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 12 lbs

Rupert is 1yrs Old Morkie (12lbs). He recently got his second round of lepo/lyme/rabies/distemper (forgive my abbreviations, not sure). I have spoken with a few people who have said this isn’t something he should need every year. But I have also read online that it depends on the breed. Help, this round of shot cost me $300. I don’t want to expose him to more shots and shell out more money if it isn’t necessary.

There are core vaccines for dogs including rabies and dhpp (distemper-parvo). Given as puppy, reboostered in 1 year, then every 3 years thereafter. The rest are non core and the decision to give or not is based on lifestyle risks for the individual dog. I have attached a website link that may help you decide about your pets lifestyle risk. That way when you go to your next visit you can decide what are the most important non-core vaccines (if any) for your pup. I hope this helps and thank you for using PetCoach! https://www.aaha.org/guidelines/canine_vaccination_guidelines.aspx
