My cat has kidney disease. Why is she still vomiting and nauseous?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Female | spayed | 13 years and 1 month old | 8.3 lbs

Hi there My cat was diagnosed with early kidney disease a month ago. She’s on a renal diet but still vomits and is often swallowing frequently which I think is nausea and is eating lightly. Is it possible that there’s another condition or is her kidney disease progressing? She’s 13, British Blue Shorthair. My vet ruled out heart issues, thryroid issues, and diabetes through tests. Her blood pressure is good.

I'm sorry to hear that Ella has kidney disease, but many cats live for years with mild disease disease. Nausea is very common with kidney disease, so we will common prescribe anti-nausea medications in conjunction with treatment. If Ella is not on fluids, sometimes we will add those in short term to help decrease nausea. If she is difficult to give medication to, sometime we can give anti-nausea medication in the fluids. I would recommend asking your vet about anti-nausea medication and see if that helps her vomiting and increases her appetite. If not, then it might be worth investigating for another disease that may be causing the vomiting. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and that Ella feels better soon.
