How to stop my German Shepherd puppy crying in his crate alone?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 9 days old | 65 lbs

I am crate training my German shepherd puppy, although, I am having a bit of trouble. During the day I leave the crate door opened for him, and he goes in as he pleases. At night time he goes in his crate and does not whine or cry as long as I am sleeping near him. On the other hand, during the day when he goes in and I lock the door and step away from his sight he cries and whines. How do I move passed this behavior? I want him to enjoy his crate, especially when I have to run an errand.

You are doing a good job with the training. I recommend during the day when you confine him to the crate to do an errand find a toy or treat he especially enjoys or something to chew or lick like a Kong filled with peanut butter or cheese and give it to him when he goes into the crate. Only give this special treat during the day when you need him to be confined to the crate. He should look forward to going into it so he gets the special something. Over time he should get over the whining behavior. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Mickey.
