My dwarf hamster has bald spots and scabs. Is it stress from moving?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 0.1 lbs

I recently moved my dwarf hamster to a new house. He seemed to be doing okay besides being a little more cautious of his surroundings. Over the weekend, I had been gone but made sure he was checked on for food and water. When I came back, he had bald spots on his back. He had scabby areas but there wasn’t any fresh blood. I cleaned his cage and didn’t find any blood. What could this mean? Should I be concerned or am I overthinking things?

Thank you for posting this question. My suspicion is that S’more may have always had a few mites, but his immune system kept them under control. Stress of moving to a new environment may have weakened his immune systems and allowed the mites to become more abundant and damaging. Of course this is all just a possibility. Other concerns like bacterial skin infection or ringworm are all possibilities as well. Regardless I suspect that the stress likely played a role in the process. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. Based on their physical examination they will recommend a treatment plan. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon.
