My puppy has worms, diarrhea, and a pot belly after deworming. Normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi. I have a 6 week old pug puppy who was born on may 20th. She is up to date with her vaccines and has been given deworming on July 1st. I've noticed that her stoll has live and dead worms which I know is part of the deworming process. She eats and runs around and if full of energy. Recently I noticed she has diarrhea with worms in them so far they are dead. She also has a pot belly. My question is, does she need more deworming. Do I have to worry about the diarrhea and the pot belly?

What a great question and I applaud you for taking a proactive approach to your pets healthcare. If your puppy only has intestinal parasites, then the potbelly and the diarrhea and the dead worms are normal for the post deworming treatment period. In order to find out whether all of the parasites are gone, you should take in a fecal sample about two weeks after the July 1 treatment date and have the vet clinic do a fecal analysis. Sometimes they need to deworm again two weeks after the first treatment. One last recommendation is that make sure you have your veterinarian start you on a monthly heartworm preventative because it also helps prevent intestinal parasites like worms. Thanks again for reaching out to us. I hope I have helped.
