My kitten has birth defects. What health issues should I watch for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed

Bunny was born without her tail. Her right leg was malformed and seem to be fused at the joint, and she has no right paw. Otherwise, she is pretty active and happy for a kitten. I was wondering if there might be a reason for her deformity and if there is anything I should keep an eye out for.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. This is likely a genetic malformation during birth. The only thing I would watch out for is pain in the affected leg and any abrasions from the leg dragging on the ground. Otherwise, she should be able to adapt to her malformation. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
