Pet's info: Dog | Scottish Terrier | Male | neutered | 6 months and 27 days old
My Scottish Terrier, male,6mos old just got neutered Tuesday, and after that, he’s having a loose stool every day and every 2hrs at night. He’s drinking and eating as normal but will just lie down for the whole day, but will play a little bit and walk around. Is this normal after surgery? This is the 1st time it happened, so I'm worried.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bowser! Anesthesia stress and medications can cause loose stool after surgery. If he seems to be comfortable and if he is on any oral medication consider stopping them in case they are causing diarrhea. Since he is waking up every 2 hours overnight I would fast him for 24 hours to rest the GI tract. Do no limit water. At the 24 hour mark start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. Call your Vet when they open Monday and tell them about the diarrhea. If it is still occurring they may have you come pick up a medication, The diarrhea in combination with the recent surgery may be making him a bit quieter than normal. I wish you the best!
