My dog vomited, has diarrhea, won't eat treats, but is still playful.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 12 lbs

My fur baby vomited late last night, then ate his normal breakfast. At obedience class, he stopped eating treats halfway through. Even after drinking water, he showed an unusual disinterest in the treats (he normally goes crazy for the duck jerky). Early evening, before and immediately after his dinner, he had diarrhea (2x). He was not out in the yard and didn't eat anything unusual either yesterday or today. Despite the 2 bouts of diarrhea, he was his usual bouncy, playful self for a while.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Diarrhea and inappetence can occur from many conditions such as pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Bamboo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. Good luck and have a good day!
