My dog has a scabby bump with a cut on his stomach. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cane Corso | Male | neutered | 8 months and 20 days old | 90 lbs

Our newly adopted Mastiff mix seems to be generally healthy. He had a little problem with the skin on his chin that some antibiotics seems to have cleared up. But I found a scabby bump on his stomach about the size of a nickel that has some kind of laceration near the center and I’m concerned because I don’t know what it is.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This could also be the site of an infection. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!
