Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed
Hi my cat recently gave birth. In the early hours (about 3am) of the morning she unfortunately had a stillborn , but the kitten was quite big and had fur. At half 2 she had another kitten, healthy, but a tiny bit smaller than the dead kitten previously. I was just wondering Is it normal for cats to have kittens with a long period of time between each other? And also, how do I know if she will have any more? Thanks.

Yes cats can have a large amount of time between each kitten, particularly if she had difficulty giving birth to the large one. At home there is no sure way to know if she’s done. If she’s nursing, cleaning the kitten and starts to eat and drink she’s probably done. If you see additional contractions or she doesn’t start to eat or take care of the kitten then please take her in for an exam. They will palpate her abdomen to see if there are more kittens, or take an X-ray. They can give an injection to help her pass another kitten or clean out the uterus if needed. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Macey.
