My dog gulps food and water. How do I prevent bloat and overeating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | neutered | 188 lbs

My 3 year old neutered great Dane doesn't know when to stop eating or drinking. He got into a bag of food a while ago and he was so fat he looked pregnant. We took him to get treated to reduce chance of bloat. With the hot weather I wanted to put a water dispensing bowl for him and my labrador. I'm concerned that he'd drink all the water. Is there something I can do to teach him not to do that. He's been this way since a puppy. He eats and drinks away from the others.

Unfortunately I think this is a behavior that is difficult to curb, especially if he is already alone when he's eating. I would make sure there's no chance he could get into food or trash when he's unsupervised to prevent overeating, and you may want to try a special bowl like this to help him slow down if he eats quickly ( If he gulps water he may not be able to handle a large bowl - you could consider freezing water in a bowl so that it thaws slowly and there's not as much to drink at once. If you're concerned about bloat you may want to ask your vet about a prophylactic gastropexy surgery where the stomach is tacked to the body wall to prevent it from flipping.
