Why does my dog's erect penis look hourglass shaped? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 11 years and 9 months old

My dog seems to have an issue with is penis. When erect, it is almost hourglass shaped. He doesn't seem to be bothered, no discharge, differently urinating, no obvious signs of discomfort. What is this? Thank you!

Hello! There is a large bulbous gland at the base of the penis, in front of the testicles that gets enlarged when the dog is excited. It often strikes people as odd looking, but is completely normal. If you can snap a picture of it the next time it happens (I know, weird!), send it back in and we can tell you if it looks like normal anatomy or not. I can't find a link to a website for a good reference picture, or I would send you one. I hope this is helpful!
