Why is my dog not eating, vomiting, and acting quiet and perturbed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rhodesian Ridgeback | Female | spayed | 16 years and 8 months old | 75 lbs

My dog, Lucky, a spade female Rhodesian Ridgeback mix, has not eaten at all today. I found vomit in the kitchen when I woke up. I have two other dogs so I don't know whose vomit it was. She is very quiet, seems perturbed, and at times has her tail between her legs. I truly am worried. She will be seven in October. Please reply.

Withhold food from Lucky for the next 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small frequent amounts. Begin with one tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount as long as there is no vomiting. Feed bland until there is no vomiting for 24-48 hours, then transition slowly to her regular diet. Monitor the other dogs for vomiting and follow the above steps if necessary. If any of your dogs should develop diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain or if the vomiting persists, then you will need to bring her (them) to your veterinarian for physical exams and possibly diagnostics to determine the underlying cause.
