Can I potty train my 2-month-old puppy outside before vaccines?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My vet reccomended to not take my 2 month old chihuahua puppy outside to potty until fully vaccinated and to use potty pads instead, but everywhere online, it says to start taking them outside. So can i start the training process or should i wait ? Thank you

Hi there. Unless you have a specific reason to think that your yard is extremely high-risk for parvo, there should be no reason that your puppy can't be potty trained outside. This is what the vast majority of puppy owners do, with no problems :) The vaccine for parvo is extremely effective - so as long as she stays current on her booster vaccines for the full series, it's very unlikely that she would contract the disease even if she were exposed. I do not typically recommend pee pad training unless you plan to continue this for the dog's entire life, as it's very confusing for them when you later "change the rules" and try to get them to potty outside instead. Much better to teach them to go outside from the start!
