My tiny puppy won't eat or gain weight. Should I give a milk supplement?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 4 lbs

We adopted a puppy from a humane society. He's super tiny and not putting on weight. He poops about 7 times a day pees about the same. We've tried 4 different soft/hard puppy foods, but we hardly ever see him eat anything. We are thinking of going to get a milk supplement, and go to bottle feeding til he gets his weight up. Is that a good idea? I live in rural alabama and I can't find a vet open today to field my question. He's scheduled for his 7 in 1 in Monday.

Being so small he really shouldn't be eating a lot. The milk supplement may actually upset his tummy. He should be eating about 1/4-1/2 cup of food a day if he is only 4 pounds. If you can see his ribs then I would try to get him to eat more. I would offer him dry and wet food. You can even try to see if he will eat some plain boiled boneless, skinless chicken and white rice. He could have intestinal parasites which is preventing him from gaining weight. If he is lethargic, has diarrhea, vomiting, or not eating at all, I would try to find an emergency vet to take him to as he could become really dehydrated and sicker if he isn't seen before Monday. I hope this helps!
