My dog has red skin and hair loss on her neck. Is it a hotspot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 5 lbs

Rapidly spreading red skin on the neck along with hair loss for the past 2 days. I think it's a hotspot from a cut from a collar but I am unsure. I have treated it with anti fungal and anti bacterial shampoo for dogs and applied an anti fungal cream to the wound. I've been watching her carefully and it does not appear to bother her or seem itchy as she has not tried to scratch it. Could someone please verify if I'm correct or is this more serious? What else can I do treat it?

I agree that it looks like a hotspot but without seeing it in person I cannot say for sure. I would try giving her Benadryl twice a day to see if this helps. See link below. I would also spray it with Benadryl spray. I bet she is scratch it more than you think. If she truly isn't, then this could be something more serious like mange. I probably wouldn't put any cream or ointment on it as we want it to dry out not stay moist. If she isn't improving, I would have your vet take a look. Your vet will be able to get her on the proper meds plus stronger allergy meds if needed. I hope this helps ! https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/#
