Is anesthesia safe for my chihuahua with a heart murmur and neck lump?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

My recently rescued chihuahua came to us with a 3-4 heart murmur. He also gets a swollen lump on one side of his neck (gland?) which changes in size., (almond to walnut) He needs dental and likely an aspiration. Im pretty worried to have him undergo anesthesia. And could the lump be anything NOT serious? Picture shows right side lump but his scruff is full normally.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Discuss your concerns with Beans vet. Preanesthetic work up such as blood work and cardiac ultrasound/X-rays etc can help assess risk and develop a plan for his optimal safety in surgery. The mass could be malignant or may also be a cyst or benign tumor. Removal and histopahtoligy is the best way to determine what it is and may be curative in the process.
