My new dog has blood in her stool and on the floor. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 56 lbs

I adopted my Am. Pit Bull Terrier from a local shelter about a week ago. She has adjusted so well. Today I saw blood in her stool and a few drops on the floor. The shelter gave her a clean bill of health and she hasn't done this before, I have been checking for worms. Should I be worried?

I would have Cinder (awesome name!) checked out by your vet tomorrow. Blood in the stool could be caused by worms or other intestinal parasites that you may not see being passed in stool, food allergies, infection, bleeding disorders, etc. Most of these issues can easily be missed with physical exam alone, and she may not have been ill at the time of examination or lab work. Depending on her relevant history and physical exam, the vet may recommend bloodwork and fecal testing for intestinal parasites. Then they can recommend an appropriate treatment plan. If she starts vomiting or shows other abnormal symptoms overnight, I would have her examined ASAP or by an open emergency veterinarian.
