My dog ate a raisin, seems fine. Is she safe or should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, my dog ate one small raisin last night, and she’s made it through the morning fine with everything pretty normal, but I’m still nervous. Her name is Punkin and she’s about 13 years old. She’s a miniature dachshund that weighs approximately 17 lbs. An hour or so after she ate it she ate her dinner and immediately after that, she pooped. I’ve been monitoring her closely and reading all these (scary) articles about dogs eating raisins, but I want to be sure, she’s my baby and I want her safe.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Unfortunately, there is no dose amount that we know is the toxic level for pets. One dog could eat one raisin and get sick and another dog could eat a 3 pound bag and not get sick. It sounds like Punkin got lucky. You can continue to monitor for vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy and take her to the vet if noted. Raisins can cause kidney disease so if you want to be thorough, you can take her to the vet for blood work to check her kidney function. Good luck and kisses to Punkin!
