My dog's eyelid is swollen after a thorn. Should I take him to vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, my dog has seemed to have been poked by a thorn while on a walk i did not recognize it until we got home and a pulled a thorn out of his eye lid. Now there is a significant bump on his eye lid.. I havent noticed it but other people have told me it looks as if its gotten worse. I have been cleaning it off with soap and water then putting anti biotic ointment on it. Is there anymore ways i could help it heal or is going to the vet my best option? I do believe i pulled the entire thorn out.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Since your treatment isn't helping, I would recommend taking Midnight to a vet. There could be an infection under the surface that needs to be removed and he may need oral antibiotics. There is a possibility of more foreign material under the skin that also needs to be removed. A close up exam by a vet will help determine the next course of action. Good luck and kisses to Midnight!
