My cat's eye is shut and tearing after a scratch. Should I see a vet?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 9 years and 1 month old | 19 lbs

What should I mainly keep watch for when mayboon scratched her eye. Good in morning saw her eye shut in the afternoon when I went in her room to give her treats. Good amount of tears for an half hour, she seemed to calm down and sleep as of rite now.

You need to have Mayboon seen by a vet as soon as possible. Because she scratched her eye, this likely damaged the cornea. Leaving this untreated can and does lead to an ulcer, which in turn can lead to vision loss if the ulcer becomes severe and/or melts. Any eye problem should be checked out by a vet promptly to prevent permanent vision loss from occurring. Please take her into the vet to have her eye examined and treated.

I'm so sorry that Myrtle has been injured. Injuries to the cornea (the clear outer portion of the eye) are very painful, so that is likely why Myrtle is keeping her eye closed. Hopefully Myrtle just has a small scratch that will heal well, but I would strongly recommend having it evaluated ASAP to get her on antibiotics if there is a scratch. My cat scratched my other cats eyeball. What do I do?
If the eye seems to be damaged (half shut) you will have to go to the vet as soon as possible to get him treated as untreated scratches on the eye can lead to severe ulcers and loss of vision eventually.

I came home from vacation to see that my cat's right eye ia obviously bothering her. She's neen diagnosed with allergies but we haven't figured out what she is allergic to. She rubs it but it doesn't really seem to bother her and there's no discharge
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. There is always a concern about a corneal laceration in cats that have been rubbing at their eyes. This does warrant a veterinary evaluation. I highly recommend that you have Maisey evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!

Your vet will need to take a look at your cat's eye to see if the scratch perforated the cornea and involved other structures of the eye. Your vet should also see it to treat it because not treating it can lead to vision loss depending on the severity of the injury. The course of treatment will depend on the severity of the injury and the part of the eye that was injured. If the wound is non-perforating and has no wound edge or opening, an Elizabethan collar will be used to prevent your cat from scratching at its eye, along with antibiotic or atropine eye solutions. Non-perforating wounds that have a mild break in the tissue, or a pinpoint wound perforation, may be treated with a soft contact lens, an Elizabethan collar, and antibiotic or atropine solutions. If the scratch goes deep into the eye and involves other structures in the eye, surgical repair will likely be needed. Your vet is the best person to determine what course of treatment is best.

My cat has a small scratch on the inner corner of his eye. It's not bleeding but it does look irritated. Should I take him to a vet or just let it heal on it's own?
Keep an eye on it and if it does not look better by tomorrow, or if he starts to scratch at it or rub his face, then get him seen by your vet as soon as possible. The worry is that if he starts rubbing or scratching, that he'll injure the eye itself and that will require more intensive treatment than a simple scratch or mild eye infection.

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear about Jynx. I always treat eye problems as emergencies since the eyes are very special sense organs and injuries/problems with them can deteriorate very quickly. It sounds like she may have scratched or poked the cornea (the outer surface of the eye). If the cornea is damaged, it needs to be treated right away and evaluated for a possible foreign body also. This condition is very painful so that's another to treat right away. Your vet can get a detailed history, do an exam, advise some tests (corneal stain, tear test if needed, measure eye pressure) and then advise a sound treatment plan with follow up appointments as needed. Eye drops, eye ointments, pain medicines, e collars to prevent self trauma to the eye, etc are all possible treatments. Good luck with Jynx.

Halo got her eye scratched by a neighborhood cat. What can i do to help her eye get better it runs all the time it looks like her eye is crying.
If Halo's actual eyeball (cornea) was scratched she should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible because she will need an antibiotic ointment to heal properly. They will use a special stain to evaluate the eye and prescribe the appropriate medication if needed.

Hi! My 2 year old male cat Gohan got a scratch on his eye (hooked around the inner corner of his eye) from one of my other cats. They are all indoor cats and never go outside. It's scabbing, he's been squinting that eye for the past 4 days and also
Poor Gohan! He does need to see a vet as soon as possible for this. The problem with a scratch to the eye is that it can become infected, and then lead to an ulcer and possible vision loss. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. It would be best to have Gohan seen by an ER vet or a vet on call, but if he absolutely cannot, I would put an Ecollar on him to keep him from rubbing his eye as he can do more damage to it. You can make one at home or get one from a pet store. You can flush his eye with sterile saline but I would not use any human eye medications on them because they aren't safe to use on dogs.

Going tomorrow is fine (waiting longer than that isn't) unless Cleo seems uncomfortable tonight. You wouldn't be able to see a scratch on the eye at home, but in the clinic they will likely stain the surface of her eye and look at it with a special light to see if there are any scratches. If you have an e-collar that fits her, putting it on tonight will prevent her from further injuring herself. And if she can't settle, wants to rub at the eye, or you see with the naked eye any changes to the way her eye looks, then I would recommend an ER trip. Good luck! Eyelids are pretty amazing and may have protected her eyeball, but definitely needs checked out tomorrow.
