My pregnant dog won't eat, vomits, drinks a lot. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 4 years and 1 month old

We have a pregnant dog, more or less on her third week. She is not eating at all for two days now but is drinking a lot of water. We tried giving her almost everything that would be easy to eat but she is rejecting it and sometimes even throws it up immediately. Its alreasy her third pregnancy and this is the first time she's in a state like this. Are we to rush her now to a vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor May! Yes, I would bring her to the Vet. I would want to be sure she doesn't have an infection in her uterus (pyometra) which requires an emergency spay. A pyometra is an emergency. Dogs with an infected uterus drink a lot, don't eat, vomit and are very sick. She should have X-rays of her belly (won't hurt any puppies), blood work and potentially an ultrasound. I wish May the very best!
