Congrats to you for wanting to protect Laser from any future injuries! While there are many pet insurance plans, they all tend to work the same. Typically pay a monthly fee (premium) to have your pet insured and in the event of any injury or care needed you would need to pay some amount of money out of pocket before the insurance company would pay for the rest of his care (your 'deductible'). You can usually pick what you want your deductible to be but this will also influence your monthly premiums. For instance, a higher deductible means you will pay more out of pocket before the insurance company takes over for the rest of the payment but you get a lower monthly premium. The reverse is true in that if you choose a low deductible you will pay less out of pocket in an injury but your monthly payments will be higher. You have to decide what you are most comfortable with. Another option still is to forgo pet health insurance altogether and just save whatever your monthly payment would be in a separate savings account. That way you are still "paying" that money every month but you're giving it to yourself for a rainy day fund. Typically, for a dog of Laser's age and breed, a monthly payment would most likely be somewhere between $60-70 a month. Saving that every month could give you enough funds for an emergency and in the event that Laser lives a long, healthy life with no emergencies you would still have that money at your disposal when he passes. An alternative option but one I think works well for people who are disciplined at saving.
