My dog has a bleeding leg wound. Is it infected, a scratch or a bite?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Black and Tan Coonhound | Male | neutered | 158 lbs

I noticed this bleeding from the back under leg of my dog. I’m not entirely sure if it is a scratch or a bite. I cleaned it up a bit, but still don’t know if it’s starting to look infected.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Boone. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian as I am concerned the wound is becoming infected. He will likely need to topically disinfectant and an oral antibiotic to help his skin heal. In the meantime, be sure to keep him from licking the area by placing an E-collar if necessary. Also keep the area clean and dry (no bathing or swimming until it heals). I hope this information helps!

These signs are quite concerning and it is very likely that antibiotics will be required as infected wound are possible. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm this clinical suspicion and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.
